STEP BY STEP

How to compress an image

  1. Add your image

Drag a JPG, PNG, or WebP into the box above, or click to pick one. You can also paste a screenshot.

  2. Pick a mode

Smart mode balances quality and size for you. Quality mode gives you a slider. Target size lets you type a KB limit.

  3. Check the result

The tool shows the new file size, how much smaller it got, and a before/after preview.

  4. Download

Save the compressed image. Your original file on disk is never touched.

REAL-WORLD USES

When compressing an image helps

Email and chat attachments

Phone photos are often 5–10MB each. Compressing them first means faster sending and no bounced emails from full inboxes.

Faster websites and listings

Smaller images load faster. Compress product photos, blog images, and banners before uploading them to your site or shop.

Forms with upload limits

Many portals reject files over a certain size. Type the limit into target-size mode and get a file that fits.

WHAT YOU GET

What makes this image compressor different

Nothing leaves your device

Compression happens inside your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to our servers — there is nothing for us to store or delete.

Three ways to compress

One-click smart mode, a manual quality slider, or an exact file-size target with quick 20/50/100/200KB presets.

Honest results

You always see the measured output size. If a file cannot get smaller without ruining it, the tool tells you instead of pretending.

Free, no strings

No watermark, no ads, no sign-up for single images. Guests can compress up to 3 images at a time.

01 / FIELD NOTE

Which mode should you use?

Smart mode is the right default for everyday sharing and storage. It picks sensible settings for each format, checks the result, and keeps your original if the “compressed” file would somehow be bigger.

Quality mode is for when you want control: drag the slider, compare the preview at full zoom, and stop where the picture still looks good to you. Target-size mode is for hard limits — it keeps trying settings until the file fits under your number, and only shrinks the picture’s dimensions if there is no other way. When that happens, it says so clearly.

02 / FIELD NOTE

What happens to each format

You uploadYou getGood to know
JPGA smaller JPGBest for photos. Hidden camera data (like location) is not carried over.
WebPA smaller WebPSame picture dimensions unless a size target forces a resize.
PNGA smaller PNGTransparency is kept. PNGs shrink less than photos, so tight size targets may need smaller dimensions.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Image compressor FAQ

Is this image compressor really free?

Yes. Compressing images is free with no watermark and no ads. You only need a free account if you want to process more than 3 images in one batch.

Will compressing an image ruin its quality?

A little quality is traded for a much smaller file — usually invisibly. Smart mode stays on the safe side, and the before/after preview lets you judge with your own eyes before downloading.

Are my photos uploaded to your server?

No. The whole compression runs in your browser using its built-in image tools. Your photo never leaves your device, which also means it works on private or sensitive images.

How small can an image get?

It depends on the picture. Detailed photos compress a lot; screenshots and graphics less so. If your target is very small (like 20KB), the tool may need to reduce the picture’s width and height — it will always tell you when it does.

What is the maximum file size I can compress?

Up to 50MB per image, in JPG, PNG, or WebP format. Guests can work on 3 images at a time; signing in raises that to 20.

Need more detail, not fewer bytes?

Compression makes files smaller, but it can’t add sharpness that was never there. If your image is too small or blurry, the AI Image Upscaler can rebuild the detail.
